Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Initiative

Established by the 2021 Cal State LA NSSLHA Board, the DEI liaisons represent the vision of promoting cultural and linguistic competence and humility in the department, while addressing fundamental issues that may sit in silence in the field of speech-language pathology and audiology. We are dedicated to advocate, celebrate, and amplify the voices of our culturally and linguistically diverse peers and future clients. We are committed to bring awareness and support the Cal State LA COMD community and initiate change for future clinicians.

Compassion drives our dedication to help others in this field, so let’s strive to use this same compassion as we respect and empower the skills and abilities of our underrepresented peers.

Our Mission:

  • Support ALL students in COMD.

  • Promote individual experience, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Create opportunities for personal experiences to be heard.

  • To explore and bring awareness to topics related to representation, microaggressions, implicit bias, cultural or linguistic insensitivity, discrimination, equity, and inclusion within CSD education.

  • Encourage engagement and reflection with uncomfortable topics in COMD.

  • Increase opportunities to increase student’s cultural competence and humility.

  • Recruit culturally and linguistically diverse high school and college students.

  • Promote allyship to spread knowledge and change

Statement:

As a student organization, we stand for cultural and linguistic competence and humility. We come together to stand against racism, bias, and microaggressions. We do not tolerate hate, violence, or discrimination against race, gender, sexual orientation, class, religion, or disability. See the department statement on racism (July 2020): link.
